Compact Hot Tubs
Compact Hot Tubs
Compact hot tubs are designed to fit where full-size spas can’t — tight patios, apartment decks, sunrooms, and any space where every square foot counts. Small footprint, lower operating costs, and in many cases narrow enough to move through a standard doorway. What to Know Before Buying a Compact Hot Tub
Compact hot tubs generally measure between 60″ × 60″ and 76″ × 76″ — roughly 5 to 6⅓ feet square — and seat 2 to 4 people depending on the model. That size range is what makes them uniquely practical: they fit on a standard apartment patio, slide into a sunroom, tuck against a fence line with room to spare, and in many cases can be moved through a standard interior doorway on their side.
If doorway or gate clearance is a factor for your installation, the compact category is where to look. Use the Fits 34″ Doorway or Fits 36″ Doorway filter to narrow to models designed for tight access, or combine filters at the Find My Hot Tub tool.
Seating Capacity in a Compact Spa
Most compact hot tubs seat 2 to 4 people. Two-person models prioritize therapeutic seating — often one lounge seat and one upright — in the smallest possible footprint. Three-person models add a seat while staying in the compact size class. Four-person compact models exist but are at the upper edge of the range and may approach mid-size dimensions depending on the brand.
Compact shells typically seat users efficiently rather than spaciously — the trade-off is a smaller footprint, not less therapeutic value. A well-designed compact spa with good jet placement can deliver the same hydrotherapy experience as a larger model in the same seat positions.
Plug-and-Play Options in the Compact Category
The compact size class has the highest concentration of plug-and-play (110–120V) models of any category. If you need a spa that runs on a standard household outlet with no electrician required, start here. Plug-and-play compact spas are well-suited for renters, cabins, covered porches, and seasonal installations where running a dedicated circuit isn’t practical.
For year-round Minnesota use, a 240V compact model with quality foam insulation will hold temperature more reliably and cost less to run monthly than a plug-and-play setup — but plug-and-play is a legitimate starting point for many buyers. Browse Plug & Play models to see what’s available in this size range.
Operating Costs for Compact Spas
Compact spas are the least expensive hot tub category to operate. Smaller water volume means less energy to heat and less energy to maintain temperature. A well-insulated 240V compact spa typically costs $20–$40 per month to run in Minnesota year-round. Plug-and-play models may cost less per hour of active use but recover temperature more slowly after a soak in cold weather, which can affect overall efficiency.
Compact Hot Tubs — New vs. Refurbished
Compact models are the most frequently turned over size in our refurbished spa program — they come in regularly, and they sell quickly. Every refurbished spa goes through a full mechanical rebuild before leaving our facility. Most compact refurbished models sell through the Priority List before they’re ever posted publicly. Join the list if you’re open to a refurbished option.
